Gift of Sight

Gift of Sight Vision 2020

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the number of people with visual disability will double by the year 2020. Moreover, a global joint initiative to eliminate unnecessary blindness, called Vision2020: The Right to Site, states that 75 percent of vision loss is preventable or treatable. In many developing countries, the medical system is faced with countless challenges, such as rising medical costs, lack of trained professionals and lack of updated medical facilities. Factors that can immediately reduce the number of people with ocular problems include providing basic eye care, surgical intervention and refractive correction.

Humanity First Approach

Humanity First proposes to help those in need by providing vision care aimed at immediate and sustained intervention. Immediate Intervention: Short term care in the form of vision camps, initially conducted 1-2 times per year (and increased as additional needs and resources are identified). The vision camp teams will consist of both eye care professionals and trained technicians to aid in testing vision, dispensing prescription eyeglasses, diagnosing eye disease, making surgical referrals and providing surgical treatment.

Sustained Intervention: Long term care with the aim of training local eye care professionals with updated diagnosis, treatment, and surgical techniques. By providing didactic education and updated training to local professionals, the people will continue to receive care long after the vision camps have returned to their home countries. Involving and training local healthcare providers, primary care physicians, and eye surgeons during the vision screenings.

By working side by side during these vision camps, we can transfer knowledge and skills to sustain long term care (as well as identify future needs and further refine our efforts). Sponsoring eye surgeons to train in the US with affiliated residency or medical programs, as funds permit. Click here for online donation.
