The United Nations celebrated its first anniversary of Humanitarian Day on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. To celebrate this occasion, Munum Naeem, Executive director of Humanity First USA (HFUSA) met with the Director of UNRWA, Mr. Andrew Whitley, and donated $20,000 on behalf of HFUSA. UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) is a relief and human development agency, providing education, healthcare, social services and emergency aid to over 4.6 million refugees living in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.
UNRWA is a subsidiary organisation of the United Nations. The Agency's chief officer, the Commissioner-General, is appointed by the UN Secretary-General after consultation with UNRWA’s Advisory Commission and is the only head of a United Nations body to report directly to the General Assembly. The Advisory Commission meets annually to review Agency activities. Its membership consists of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. The EC, League of Arab States and Palestine Liberation Organization attend as observers.
HFUSA’s $20,00 donation is in addition to the $10,000 that was donated earlier this year to UNRWA to help the refugees, specifically children, who were displaced during the conflict. At this meeting, other areas of common interest and future cooperation were also discussed, including Humanity First’s response to international natural disasters and its human development programs worldwide.
